Sodium benzoate is best known as the preservative that extends the shelf life of processed foods and beverages — but its uses go much further, into medicines, cosmetics, personal care and industrial products.
It is an odourless crystalline powder produced by reacting benzoic acid with sodium hydroxide. Benzoic acid is an effective preservative on its own; converting it to the sodium salt makes it far easier to dissolve in the products it protects.
